Who we are
Rene Hernandez-Flores
Founder, R & J Academy
Soccer has always been a part of who I am. I started R & J Academy because I truly love being around the game—whether it’s playing, coaching, or just helping others grow through it. My goal is simple: to help as many young players as possible become better, more confident soccer players and chase their goals with everything they’ve got.
I’ve been coaching club soccer for the past 4 years and high school varsity soccer for 4 years, including 3 years at Wilsonville High School and 1 year at Sherwood High School. Before that, I had the privilege of playing at a high level—competing for Willamette United, OPFC, and the Portland Timbers Academy.
During my time at Wilsonville High School, I was a two-time Player of the Year, First Team All-State selection, and helped lead my team to a state championship game, scoring 34 goals in one season. After high school, I continued my playing career at Clark College.
But as much as I loved playing, I’ve found my purpose in coaching. I’m passionate about creating a training environment that’s challenging, supportive, and fun—where players are excited to learn, grow, and compete. There’s nothing better than seeing someone light up after improving a skill or hitting a milestone they’ve worked hard for. That’s why I do this.
If you’re serious about taking your game to the next level, I’d love to help you get there.
Jose Perez
Founder, R & J Academy
Soccer has shaped my life in every way. I started R & J Academy because my passion for the game runs deep—whether I’m on the field, on the sidelines, or working one-on-one with players. My mission is to support young athletes in becoming stronger, more confident players, and to inspire them to pursue their goals with dedication and heart.
My journey in the game started with FC Portland and continued through the Portland Timbers Academy where I had the opportunity to make appearances for Portland Timbers 2, making my professional debut in high school. I went on to play at Yavapai College, one of the top junior college programs in the country. During my time there, I earned back-to-back NJCAA All-America honors, tallying 38 assists and 30 goals in two seasons.
After Yavapai, I transferred to play Division 1 soccer at the University of Illinois of Chicago and during summer breaks, I competed with the Portland Timbers U23. Post-college, I continued playing at a high level with PDX FC.
For the past two years, I’ve been coaching club soccer and helping players grow both on and off the field. What sets me apart is my passion for the game and my commitment to my players' development. I love seeing how much progress can be made with focused, personalized training — and I bring that same energy and dedication to every session at R & J Academy.
